How this works. Universal life CAN work as a tax shelter, but only when every
load-bearing condition exists at once. The tax rules cap what can be sheltered (the exempt test),
tax living withdrawals above the policy's adjusted cost basis as regular income, and make death the
only fully tax-free exit. Meanwhile the costs apply no matter what: premium tax, insurance charges,
investment fees. Blue tiles are load-bearing: pull one and the strategy collapses. Teal tiles
are supporting: missing ones crack the structure and deserve hard questions. If you pulled
Emergency Fund or Registered Rooms, the order of operations is
backwards; basic savings come first.
