A sample

The first page of a plan

A sample household, so you can see the shape of a plan before you start. Your own plan follows the same pages with your figures.

Sample

Maya, 36, and Daniel, 38 · Calgary · one child · a home with a mortgage

With a net worth of $270,300 and $982 a month to spare, your savings last to Maya's 99 if you follow this plan; the first thing to do is insure Maya's and Daniel's lives.

Net worth

$270,300

Home, savings and pensions, less the mortgage and debts

Monthly surplus

+$982

After tax, the bills, debt payments and savings

Emergency fund

$6,500

Of a $23,550 target: three months of essentials

Retirement

Lasts to Maya’s 99

If they follow the plan, spending $3,570 a month from 2052, in today’s dollars

Start here, this month

  1. Get a term life quote: about $1,290,000 on Maya and $1,290,000 on Daniel.
  2. Book an Alberta lawyer for the will, the enduring power of attorney and the personal directive.
  3. Pay $1,132 a month on the credit card (its $150 payment plus $982).

Then the money, in order

  • Pay off the credit card: $1,132 a month for about 3 months, then $986 in January 2027.
  • Build the emergency fund: $1,132 a month from February 2027 for about 15 months, then $71 in May 2028.
  • Put money in the RESP for the grant: $208 a month from June 2028 to December 2037, to draw the $500 a year grant.
  • Pay down the car loan early: $1,374 a month from June 2028 for about 7 months, then $1,340 in January 2029.

Then the TFSA steps, Daniel’s disability cover, the full cash flow, the debts, the retirement chart, insurance, estate papers and the assumptions behind every figure. The household and figures are illustrative.

How it works

Four steps, one sitting

  1. Answer eight short steps. You and your partner, income, spending and home, savings, debts, goals and protection. Your answers stay on this device as you go.
  2. See your snapshot, free. Your net worth, your monthly surplus or shortfall, and how many actions your plan found.
  3. Choose and pay. On Stripe’s secure page; your card details never touch our site.
  4. Read your plan at once. Trevor’s note follows within two business days, and the review if you chose it.
Before you start

Have these handy

Rough figures are fine. Anything you leave blank takes a stated default, and the plan lists every default it used.

  • Last year’s T4, or a recent pay stub: your pay before tax
  • Your notice of assessment, or CRA My Account: your RRSP and TFSA room
  • My Service Canada Account: your CPP estimate at 65
  • Your pension statement, if you have a plan at work
  • Statements for your RRSP, TFSA, FHSA, RESP and investments
  • Your mortgage statement and any loan or credit card statements
  • Your benefits booklet: life and disability cover through work
Questions

Common questions

How much does a financial plan cost in Alberta?

A full plan from a fee-only planner commonly costs a few thousand dollars, because it is built by hand around your whole situation. The Simple Plan is a flat $199 for one household, or $299 with a 30-minute video review, paid once. For a complex plan, see our pricing page.

Is it really a flat fee?

Yes. $199, or $299 with the review, paid once. No GST is charged at present. There is no subscription and no commission on the advice, and the snapshot before you pay is free. Either fee is credited to a full plan within 90 days.

Who reads my plan?

Trevor Lawrence, CFP®, CIM®, reads every plan that is bought and sends you a personal note within two business days. You can ask one follow-up question by email.

What happens to my answers?

They stay on your device as you type. For the free snapshot they are sent to our server to be worked out and are not kept. When you pay, a sealed copy, encrypted on your device so only Maple Groove can open it, is kept so Trevor can read your plan. Your card details go to Stripe and never touch our site.

Can I change my answers after I pay?

Yes. For 30 days you can edit your answers and re-run your plan, up to 25 times, on the device you paid on. Try retiring at 62 instead of 65, or a larger mortgage payment, and see what moves.

Does the plan tell me what to invest in?

No. It tells you which accounts and debts come first and how much, and where your insurance and estate papers fall short. It does not recommend investments or insurance products; a full plan or a conversation is the place for that.

What if my situation is more complicated?

If you are paid through your own corporation, self-employed, living outside Alberta, or your plan turns on a trust, a holding company, rental properties or a cross-border question, book a call instead. We quote a full plan up front.
